this paper is an attempt to bridge the gap between research in translation on the one hand and the teaching of translation, on the other, by providing a new approach to the teaching of translation, notably at university level. The philosophy behind this method is to supply future translators with the real tools that they need for their trade. The technology that frames this pragmatic approach to translation teaching is computer-assisted translation (CAT) which, under proper tutorial supervision and training, can offer the student the opportunity to develop his or her translating skills to the full. Therefore, the contribution of the translation teacher to this overall plan is analysed and reassessed.
