Zusammenfassung

During the last years, Spain has become one of the main destinations of the migratory flows towards developed countries. Family regrouping processes have, among other things, contributed to the increasing presence in our classrooms of students from different origins, languages and cultures. This situation has given rise to the appearance of certain beliefs about the school's language acquisition by these boys and girls, as well as its effect on their academic achievement. The paper thus reviews various research studies carried out in countries with a long tradition in integrating immigrant students together with some of the few Spanish studies. These studies show the complexity of teaching-learning processes involving a new language and, directly related, the extent to which school failure affects these children. The present monograph includes five studies that primarily address the implications of all this factors on educational practice, but without leaving aside social conditioning factor that determine what actions are carried out from the school.
