This paper analyses business cycle synchronization of Catalonia in relation to Spain and EMU cycle, during the pe-riod 2000-2010. The aim is to know to what extent the Catalan business cycle has a greater degree of synchronization with EMU cycle rather than with the Spanish one. The question is to evaluate if the border effect in the region has decreased with the EMU integration. That is that the linkages with neighboring countries/regions could compensate the country effect to regional scale. The results tend to show that Catalonia has increased business cycle synchro-nization with the EMU and has decreased with the Spanish cycle. These results are related to the fact that Catalonia has increased trade intensity and decreased the sectoral specialization over the EMU and it has done it in greater degree than one detected with Spain.
