Nueva y vieja pobreza

Zusammenfassung

The rising unemployment rate and low-wage employment have led to income reduction for an increasing number of families, thus pushing them into poverty, relative in some cases and absolute in others. In this sense, the province of Lleida is no exception, leading an enormous number of people to precarious situations. With this background frame, the aim of this paper is to analyze their living conditions, the problems they face on a daily basis and their coping strategies. The data presented was obtained from 16 discussion groups with social workers and educators from all across the province of Lleida. The main results revealed three different patterns: i) the emergence of a new poverty profi le; ii) the existence of people with multi-problems who develop different survival strategies; iii) the “normalization” of the perception of poverty among the population. All the above-mentioned suggest that a more comprehensive approach than the existent one is required in order to improve their quality of life.
