Introduction The study analyse the relationship between social support and quality of life in HIV-positive adults over 50 years of age. At the same time determinate the strength of social support and other risk factors. Method Cross-sectional study in a cohort of patients HIV positive adults over 50 years to Hospital Universitari MútuaTerrassa (HUMT). Medical Records were reviewed, and sociodemographic variables, clinical variables of HIV, variables such as alcohol and tobacco use, history of consumption and comorbidities were collected. Social support was measured by the DUKE questionnaire and the quality of life by EQ-5D questionnaire. Results 51 patients, mean age was 59.2 years (SD 6.8). Social support was adequate in 39 cases (76.5%) and 12 (23.5%) was low. We found a higher median score (interquartile range) for quality of life in those patients with adequate social support vs. those patients with low social support, both in the EQ-5D scores (0.79 (0.23) vs 0.72 (0.26); p <0.05) as in the EVA visual scale (80 (20) vs 67 (32.5), p <0.05). Other factors associated with less social support were living or feeling alone, psychiatric illness and methadone use. Conclusions Social support in HIV positive adults over 50 years of age is important to improve the quality of life. Living or feeling alone affects negatively. Comorbidities, such as psychiatric diseases are the most negative influences together with the use methadone.
