Abstract

Forced marriage constitutes a phenomenon that has been addressed primarily through incrimination since the signature of the Convention of the European Council on Preventing and Combating Violence against Women and Domestic Violence (Istanbul Convention) in 2011. On the basis of an orientalist approach, most European countries have punished these conducts without first carrying out empirical research that would allow to understand this reality and without articulating other protection mechanisms for victims beyond the resource to Criminal Law. In order to fill this empirical research gap in Spain, once the existence of experiences of forced marriage had been confirmed by means of a quantitative study with entities providing assistance to victims at a national level, it was decided to undertake qualitative research with victims. Based on the conviction that the design of an adequate program to assist them requires an in-depth knowledge of the suffering that this type of process produces in those who experience it and what is desirable for victims in terms of assistance and protection, a qualitative investigation was carried out consisting of 5 in-depth interviews with victims of forced marriage whose main results are presented here.
