Resumen

64 Landrace x Large-White male hybrids were used and distributed in four semi-slatted (16 animals / module) modules and 4 pens (4 animals / pen) inside each module. The experimental period lasted for 35 days. In the sealed modules the input and output airflow as well as their corresponding concentrations of CH4 was controlled. The Control (BPBF) ration was formulated based on conventional levels of crude protein (CP) and netro detergent fiber (NDF) (12.5 and 12%) from the control ration the CP and NDF content were increased by 5% in rations high in protein (AP), high in NDF (AF) or both (APAF). At the end of the experimental period 16 animals (1/corral: 4/treatment) were selected and sacrificed to perform the sampling of the cecum and colon to determine the abundances of certain types of microorganisms.Throughout the large intestine abundances of total bacteria (TB) and methanogenic archaea increased. No significant effect of NDF in the ration was shown on the abundances of both TB and Hyrogenotrophic methanogenic archaea (HMA) where increase in CP significantly increased those aforementioned abundances. Despite of any significant differences in both enteric CH4 emissions and the concentration of total archaeas (TA) in the colon but they increased with high levels of protein or fiber. These results suggest that the concentration of TA can be somehow related to enteric methane emissions level.
