Abstract
This article presents part of the results of exploratory investigation, carried out in December 1993. The aim of the research was to examine the possibilities of comparing, from a contrastive point of view, phonetic aspects of the English and Catalan phonologies. Based on the methodologies of James (1980) and Krzeszwowski (1990), the analysis consisted of a theoretical part in which some articulatory deviations which an English subject speaking Catalan as a foreign language might make are predicted. In this paper, the more practical second part is presented. The method consisted in recording three English informants reading a text in Catalan in order to prove the theoretical predictions. Aware of their shortcomings, we present some of the more interesting results here.
